Bushcraft experience day (Charity event)
December 8 @ 9:00 am - 4:30 pmFree
Bushcraft experience day (charity event).
- ever wondered what bushcraft is all about?
- seen Bear Grylls and Ray Mears and wanted have a go
- been camping and wished you knew a few knots and tricks with the fire and shelter
Then join NTC Bushcraft on an exploration day learning about setting camp, building fires, building shelter and some camp craft like knot tying, knife and axe work and carving.
This session is open to adult/child pairs only.
To join in you may book one adult with one child. The adult is anybody over 18 responsible for the child and the child is a son, daughter, nephew, niece etc.. being looked after by the adult.
The lower age limit is down to the adult. Most of the activities can be handled by youngsters but to keep focussed all day I’d suggest 7+. We will use knives and axes but the adult can determine how much access to the knife is allowed. I prefer early access to knives for youngsters as we can try to instill proper safe and respectful use at an early age. Your choice. (previous events have included a 70 year old father and 45 year old son…. he was allowed to use the knife)
The itinerary for the day will depend a little on the weather but should include:
- Introductions, site tour and ‘what is bushcraft’
- Shelter fundamentals and options.
- Build a simple Tarp shelter and 4 knots. (taut tarp hitch, evenk/Siberian hitch, taut line hitch, bowline)
- Fire lighting challenge.
- Demo fire making. Fire steel, flint, solar, chemical. Include tinder and wet weather.
- Knife and Axe safety
- Whittling challenge
- Anything else we have time for..
- Next steps.
What is included?
Bring your own lunch and water bottle.
All equipment is provided.
The camp has shelter but wear clothing appropriate to the season.
Tea, coffee, hot chocolate available.
Plenty of fresh water, cup and a hot kettle all day
Toilets a short walk away
Parking in the street close by.
Are there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event?
Minimum age is at the discretion of the adult.
How much does it cost?
There is no charge for this event.
NTC Bushcraft is giving its time free of charge and Ampthill Park is providing the site.
We do ask that each adult consider making a donation to the Mayors supported charities as a gesture and for feedback on the event to be posted on both organisations social media.
OK, so how much is a ‘gesture’?
This is an all day activity. Other similar events have generated and average of £15 per head for the charity but it is suggested any donation be made in a sealed envelope and you pay what you think it is worth within what you can afford. Your bushcraft leader will collect any donations at the end of the session.
