Session 3 (Morning)

We understand now how fire works. We know how to build fires in all conditions and how to make fire using various methods. We also have practice in making flame from ember.

This session will concentrate on the hugely satisfying skill of making fire using a bow drill to create the ember.

You will make your own bow drill set and take this away with you to continue practicing.

1. Review previous sessions and discuss where additional time is needed.
2. Using stock equipment, create embers using bow drill (group or individual)
3. Identify bow drill parts and functions.
4. look at wood types suitable for different parts and identify local source for the wood.
5. Gather material and make the bow drill set.
6. Make fire with your new set !!!!
7. Next steps

This session may require the supply of material from an external source dependant on the local availability and permission to harvest.

Duration 4 hours.

Session 4 (afternoon)

We can now cut and chop and set fire to things in a camp with shelter. We now start to look at making improvements to the camp, how we build our fire for cooking and general warmth and looking outside camp to see what is around us to help.
We will start looking at trees around us and how we may use them in bushcraft situations. We will look at basic camp furniture and how we source the correct material for the job.
We will look at natural cordage and make some string that we can use in the camp.

1. Review previous sessions and discuss where additional time is needed.
2. Fire furniture; tripods, pot hangers etc….
3. Knot review and more knots.
4. Natural cordage – source and make some nettle cordage.
